Dalai Lama honored with 2017 KISS Humanitarian Award/ENG

DHARAMSHALA, November 21: The Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) today honored the Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama with ‘KISS Humanitarian Award’, 2017 for his efforts in promotion of peace, harmony and nonviolence at its campus in Bhubaneshwar.

His Holiness became the award’s 10th recipient and the first Nobel Laureate to receive the award, which started in 2008 to recognize and honor individuals who have made outstanding contribution to the humanity.

The Dalai Lama after receiving a tribal painting along with the memento presented by Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder of KIIT & KISS and Saswati Bal, President of KIIT & KISS, said that the responsibility of making the 21st century, a century of compassion, falls on the present generation.

“There is a possibility of creating a compassionate century because basic human nature is more compassionate. Even scientists with their researches agree to it. If basic human nature is anger then there is no hope,” the Dalai Lama said.

In his address to over 20,000 students of KISS, he said that India is the birthplace of Buddhism and that great Indian scholars emerged from Odibisha, the ancient name of Odisha in Buddhist scriptures.

“Modern world lacks moral principles and lacks knowledge on how to tackle our destructive emotions. So in such situation, ancient Indian knowledge of human emotion is not just the ancient one but a very relevant aspect in today’s world” His Holiness said, after stating that modern study of psychology is at ‘kinder garden’ level when compared with ancient Indian psychology.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama teased the 20th century Indians of neglecting the ancient Indian knowledge. He said, “The Young Indians belonging to 21st century must now pay more attention towards ancient Indian knowledge about emotion and mind, which can be really useful to the modern world.”

With majority students coming from underprivileged and poor background, the 82-year-old said that the so-called caste system is outdated, totally wrong. He further added that the ‘old way of thinking’ is a discrimination of underprivileged people.

His Holiness also visited the residential institution for tribal people’s sister institution Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), where he was felicitated with a silver statue of Lord Buddha.

In his talk at the institution’s convocation center, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader said that every individual should try to become more compassionate in order for the 7 Billion humans to be compassionate.

Yesterday, His Holiness met with the Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik, at the Chief Minister's residence in Bhubaneswar. At the meeting the Tibetan spiritual leader thanked the CM for the hospitality for Tibetans who have settled in the state. Setup in 1963, Phuntsokling Tibetan settlement is situated in Gajapati District in Odisha.
