DHARAMSHALA, April 23: Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama has welcomed the ongoing talks for denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula between North and South Korea along with the United States.

The Tibetan leader who has been a staunch advocate for demilitarisation in the world instead called for dialogue between nations to reach solutions. He has repeatedly endorsed peaceful means as supposed to war to resolve conflicts and has said that the 21st century should be “the century of dialogue”.

He wrote, “I welcome North Korea’s announcement that it will halt nuclear and missile tests with immediate effect. I am particularly encouraged that this move is taking place in the context of efforts to achieve agreement through dialogue.”

It is my hope that the forthcoming meeting between the two Korean leaders, followed by a summit with the President of the USA, can take place in a spirit of amity, compromise, and transparency, enabling the resolution of past disagreements. I am optimistic that these talks will lead to the establishment of trust between the two Koreas resulting ultimately in the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.”

The 82-year-old said the progress made in the current talks could becomes a “model of a human approach to peace” and that it will have, “deep impact on the elimination of nuclear weapons worldwide”.

Leaders from Pyongyang and Seoul are scheduled for the inter-Korean summit on April 27 where the two leaderships will sit face-to-face after over a decade.
