DHARAMSHALA, Oct. 3: The Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama today while offering prayers and condolence for the victims of mass shooting in the American city of Las Vegas said it is an unimaginable tragedy resulting from lack of respect for life and compassion towards fellow human beings.

59 people died and 527 people got injured in Sunday’s shooting in Las Vegas, US when an assailant fired indiscriminately upon people watching a concert. Experts regard the incident as the deadliest mass shooting in the US history.

The Tibetan leader was speaking at the opening day of the four-day teaching at the request of followers from Taiwan. The teaching at Thekchen Choeling Tsuglagkhang at McLeod Ganj, is on Chandrakirti’s Entering the Middle Way (Tib: uma jukpa).

The Dalai Lama said that the rift between people arises due to the idea of “us and them” and differentiation on the basis of race, religion and culture and that compassion and love is the antidote for such negative feelings.

He said, “Desire for happiness is universal to all sentient beings. However, unlike animals, we humans have an inborn faculty of thought. Therefore, we should use this faculty to develop happiness through love and compassion.

“If you keep harboring anger or jealousy towards others, it will be you who is at the losing end, because you will remain mentally disturbed unless you resolve it,” the egalitarian Tibetan leader further said.

Over 5000 devotees from close to 70 countries and local Tibetans from Dharamshala are attending the teachings that will continue for the next three days.
