DHARAMSHALA, August 31: The Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama has expressed his condolences and sympathy over the devastation by
Hurricane Harvey in Texas, United States, which has so far taken over 30 lives and damaged over 50,000 homes.

“I am saddened by reports of the unprecedented storm that has hit southeast Texas, especially the Houston area, causing loss of life and immense damage to property, as well as bringing hardship to thousands of people,” he wrote to the Texas Governor, Greg Abbott, in a letter dated August 29.

Said to be the worst hurricane to hit Texas in 50 years, the tropical storm has forced over 32,000 people to take refuge in emergency shelters. The storm also proved costly with Moody's Analytics estimating the economic loss, in economic activity and property damage combined, from the storm at $51 billion - $75 billion.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama recalled his fond memories of his visit to the state of the former US President and friend George W. Bush. The Tibetan spiritual leader in his condolence letter said that it saddened him to see all the ‘havoc wrought by this extraordinarily massive storm.’

Recognizing the rescue and relief efforts to assist those affected by one of the worst flooding, the Dalai Lama said, “I would like to express my deep sympathy and condolences to those bereaved and those who have been left devastated by this catastrophe. My thoughts are with the people of Texas at this time.”

Governor Abbott have asked the people to be cautious as the ‘worst is not yet over for southeast Texas, as far as the rain is concerned. “When you look at comparisons, the population size and the square-mile size of the area impacted – both by the hurricane swath and the flooding – it’s far larger than Hurricane Katrina and Sandy,” the Governor said while announcing 10,000 out-of-state National Guard troops joining the 14,000 Texas troops in rescue missions.

The costliest hurricane disaster was registered in 2005, when Hurricane Katrina ran havoc in the Gulf Coast of the country, costing $108 billion in property damage. Governor Abbott feels that Hurricane Harvey would surpass the amount of damage caused by Katrina.
