Action, patience, and determination, in order to create a peaceful and harmonious world, were the words of Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama to a group of young leaders from various countries.

Twenty-five young leaders from countries challenged with conflicts and wars met with him at his residence in McLeod Ganj.

The Dalai Lama said that the problems prevailing in the world today are not created by anybody other than the human beings. “It’s us (humans) who have to solve the problems.”

“Praying alone doesn’t solve the problem. We must act.”

He also said that due to biological reasons, women are more compassionate, and called for women to take leading roles in bringing peace. He said that women’s milk is symbol of peace.

Over the issue of religious intolerance, he said that there are two facts. “One is that we follow our own beliefs, and the second is that the world has many beliefs which are followed by others.”

“We must respect other religions, as all the religions have helped humanity.”

The young leaders were from Afghanistan, Colombia, Iraq, Myanmar, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, and the United States. They were brought to India by the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) to have interaction with the Dalai Lama.

They shared their experiences in conflict zones, and their initiatives in tyring to make a difference in the community.

Praising their contributions, the Dalai Lama said that bringing awareness is the basic means to bring change among people.

However, he said that the modern education taught in schools and universities lacked lessons on inner values.

“Modern education is materialistic-oriented. Lessons on inner values must be incorporated in school curriculums.”

He asked the youth to put efforts to create dialogue to resolve conflicts, and said, “Violence is symbol of weakness.”
