Not drugs but ancient Indian knowledge to achieve inner peace, says Dalai Lama/ENG

DHARAMSHALA, Aug. 23: Exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama has said that ancient Indian knowledge can help achieve lasting inner peace, not drugs and recreational substances.

The Tibetan leader’s message was recorded on Wednesday at his residence here, at the behest of the Himachal Pradesh Police’s Anti-Drug Campaign for Indian Youth. Santosh Patial, the Dharamshala Superintendent of the Police was also in attendance.

“These young people, lack (the) knowledge or experience on how to bring inner peace. So they rely on tranquilizers, drugs. The drugs are physically harmful, including too much alcohol,” the Tibetan leader is seen saying.

The Tibetan monk and a devout advocate for the Nalanda school of thoughts said that India is at a unique vantage point, in that the repository of ancient knowledge already exists and is only a matter of revival in the country.

The Dalai Lama said that cultivation of inner peace should be brought to schools as a secular subject devoid of religious connotations to cater to a common template. He said such culture can have trickle down effect in terms of controlling the trends of excessively relying on drugs and alcohols to find peace.

He said that only modern India has neglected its ancient treasures although adding that only India can make “significant contribution” in that direction.
