DHARAMSHALA, June 22: His Holiness the Dalai Lama arrived in Minnesota yesterday to attend a panel discussion organized by Eden Prairie-based Starkey Hearing Technologies on June 23.

Currently on his two-week tour of the US, the Dalai Lama will participate in the panel discussion titled ‘A Call for Compassion and Conscious Kindness’ at the invitation from Starkey CEO and philanthropist Bill Austin and his wife Tani Austin, Starkey chief philanthropy officer.

The panel discussion will also feature Forest Whitaker, Hollywood actor and UNESCO special envoy for peace and reconciliation on June 23. However the event will not be open to the public.

Bill Austin in the official announcement on the Dalai Lama’s visit last week said, “At Starkey Hearing Technologies, we share the Dalai Lama’s belief that the need for authentic, intentional human-to-human relationships is more vital than ever.”

Around 400 Tibetans, young and old, received the Tibetan spiritual leader upon his arrival at the hotel along with Bill Austin and his wife. The octogenarian leader was given a traditional welcome as he walked past well-wishers lined up at the entrance.

On June 24, His Holiness will meet with the local Tibetan community. He will then travel to Boston where he is scheduled to meet scientists and scholars to discuss ways to ‘promote compassion, love and kindness.’

The Dalai Lama is scheduled to leave for India on June 26 and head for Ladakh on a six-weeks’ sojourn including trips to Nubra and Zanskar region.
