Dalai Lama arrives in Mundgod, visits Drepung Monastery/ENG

DHARAMSHALA, December 11: Following his visit three-day stay in Mumbai, Tibetan Spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama today arrived in Mundgod, Karnataka.

Khen Rinpoche, the Abbot of Drepung Monastery and Jigme Tsuiltrim, the Settlement Officer of Doeguling Tibetan settlement, Mundgod gave a traditional welcome upon His Holiness’s arrival at the monastery’s Tsokchen, the main prayer hall.

The Dalai Lama, expressing his gladness upon seeing many senior monks said that it makes him realize how old he too has gotten. However, he said that during the time in exile all the monks of previous generations have done exceptional work in preserving the teachings of the Buddha.

“The aged maybe on threshold of next life and come to think of next life, I urge you to keep calm since all of you have worked wholeheartedly in keeping the teachings of Buddha alive through very difficult times,” the Dalai Lama said.

The exile Tibetan spiritual leader said that he feels that coming into exile may have proven a ‘blessing in disguise’ and that the monks and scholars of elder generations must feel proud of what they have achieved.

“It is natural for the older generations to pass away. It has been over 2500 years since Buddha’s passing, however, his teachings are still preserved and have been passed on through numerous generations. So, the responsibility is now on the younger generation to continue its preservation,” the Tibetan spiritual leader said.

The octogenarian leader lauded the Tibetan monastic institutions including Sera, Drepung and Gaden for being the center of preservation of Tibetan Buddhism, based upon the Nalanda tradition. “It is something which Tibetans should be proud of and something that can go shoulder to shoulder with modern science,” the Dalai Lama said.

The 82-year-old spiritual leader has often maintained that one of his main goals is to revive the ancient Indian Tradition in India. He reminded that it is upon the scholars of Tibetan Buddhism to lead and help in its revival.
