DHARAMSHALA, December 12: The Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama said he may have devolved all political powers but will never forget Tibet and the Tibetan people. The Tibetan spiritual leader was speaking at a public talk at Drepung Loseling Monastery in Mundgod where he arrived on Monday.

The Tibetan spiritual leader, who completely devolved his political power in 2011, recalled how turbulence during a flight from Guwahati to Dibrugarh made him fear for his life. The Dalai Lama shared his concern that it made him think what the six million Tibetans who have vested their hopes in him would do if he were to meet with an accident.

“I will never forget our Tibetan struggle. I may have devolved my political power but I continue to speak out for the Tibetan environment. So I consider this as one of my duties to protect the fragile environment of Tibetan plateau,” the Dalai Lama said.

Expressing his desire to meet with the students and Tibetans living in the area, the Dalai Lama said that Tibetans have come in exile to keep the Tibetan struggle alive and to preserve the rich Tibetan cultural heritage and language.

“As for the study of scriptures, it should not be strictly limited to the monastic populous. Even school students and common people must study the texts,” the Dalai Lama said.

He also reminded that it is a collective responsibility of every Tibetan to preserve and study the rich teachings of the Nalanda Masters, which encourages to examine the teaching using reasoning and logic rather than simply believing in the teaching.

The 82-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader recalled how the first generation of Tibetan refugees worked as laborers in road construction with the help from the Indian government managed to set up various Tibetan settlements.

The Dalai Lama also urged the Tibetan youth to combine the modern education with ancient Nalanda knowledge to spread peace. He said, “For that, firstly you need modern education, without which you will be handicapped and secondly you must study the Buddhist philosophy best described in Tibetan. Only then you will be properly equipped.”
