Combine modern education with the insights of ancient Indian knowledge: Dalai Lama/ENG

DHARAMSHALA, December 11: The Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama stressed on the importance of combining modern education with the knowledge of the ancient Indian tradition on the final day of his three - day Mumbai visit at Somaiya Vidyavihar yesterday.

“I believe we need to combine modern education with the insights of ancient Indian knowledge. I believe that understanding the workings of the mind and emotions is very relevant in today’s world. That’s why I am committed to reviving this ancient knowledge in this country,” His Holiness said at the public talk on ‘Reviving Indian Wisdom in Contemporary India’ organized by Vidyaloke.

The Tibetan spiritual leader said that the roots of the knowledge of how to tackle destructive emotion could be found in the ancient Indian tradition, especially in Buddhist tradition taught through the Nalanda masters.

“Tibetans have kept this knowledge (karuna and ahimsa) alive through study and practice for more than a thousand years,” said the 82-year-old spiritual leader, who announced that his is fully committed to ‘revive the ancient Indian Knowledge in India’.

Describing himself as a ‘son of India’, the exiled Tibetan leader said, “Every cell of my brain has been filled with Nalanda thought, while, for the last 58 years my body has been nourished by Indian rice, dal and chapatis. What’s more, I admire the rich diversity that thrives in this country and the stability of India’s religious harmony.”

The Tibetan spiritual leader urged the audience to think about what has been said during the talk if they find it interesting. If not, he said, they can forget it since it is not his intention to impose anything on anyone.

The Tibetan spiritual leader arrived in the Tibetan settlement of Mundgod, where he will be staying till December 17. On December 14, he will be inaugurating the Drepung Loseling Meditation and Science Center.
