DHARAMSHALA, September 14: His Holiness the Dalai Lama participated in a conference on ‘Western Science and Buddhist Perspectives’ today saying such meetings with scientists is an ‘important’ aspect for developing farsighted and holistic approach.

“Getting old is sign of moving of time. If time does not move, there will be no further development and progress. So the very basis of change is time movement and according to that reality we have the opportunity to explore our intelligence to the maximum with farsighted and holistic viewpoint,” said the 82-year-old Dalai Lama at the conference in Jahrhunderthalle convention center in Frankfurt.

Despite the scientific developments in the field of technology and economy, the Tibetan spiritual leader feels that today’s world is going through a ‘mental crisis’ due to too much fear and anger. He added that the unrest nature leads to actions such as killing and bullying.

Reminding the basic nature of humans as compassionate, the Dalai Lama said, “Now the scientists, especially studying brain, are beginning to feel that the mental consciousness plays an important role to keep peace of mind and eventually healthy body.”

The conference discussed secular ethics in education and its need for developing better people and mindfulness practices and its impact on psychological aspect and brain.

To explain ethics, His Holiness said, “Any action, mental or physical or verbal, that brings happiness, comfort and benefit to others is ethics.”

A strong advocator of inclusion of secular ethics as part of school curriculums, the Dalai Lama said that irrespective of believers and non-believers, if the essence of every religion is followed there would be no causes for violence, suffering and killing. He said that ‘systematic education’ of warmheartedness is the ‘key factor’.

The Dalai Lama recalled the renowned late German physicist and his Physics tutor, Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker in the presence of his son Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker, scientist and politician, at the conference. Ulrich attended at the request of His Holiness as a gesture to honor the late German physicist, who passed away in 2007.

“He was not only my friend but my teacher of Quantum Physic as well. However, I was a hopeless student because when I listen to his explanations it seems that I have understood something but after our sessions there is nothing in my brain,” the Dalai Lama joked with Ulrich.
