DHARAMSHALA, April 29: The Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama took part in an interactive discussion “interactive Query in the field of Ancient Indian Philosophy and Modern Sciences” along with scientists, academicians and scholar in the premises of his residence near Theckchen Choeling on Friday.

The one day event participated by four leading experts and noted monastic academics and Tibetan intellectuals was along the lines of the ‘Mind and Life’ initiative where Buddhist philosophies and modern science collaborate to contribute to various spheres of humanity.

The Tibetan leader who established the Mind and Life institute back in 1987 along with Francisco Varela lauded the speakers and remarked the “discussions and presentations were wonderful”. Speaking on the need to further probe the unknown and unexplained phenomenon using human acumen, the Dalai Lama said, “Certain things that are not very clear, those give us the opportunity to further investigate and further analyze. If everything is obvious then there is no need for this (quest to uncover). The mysterious things, the dilemmas give us real opportunity to use the human brain to the maximum way.”

He further referenced the use of human intellect in meditative practices wherein analytical meditation or Vipasana is much more effective than single-pointed meditation.

While raising hope that in the future, scientists and intellectuals from both India and China could partake in the Mind and Life conferences, he joked on the deep and intricate nature of the subject matters discussed through the day. “Hopefully the audiences are less confused than me,” the 80 year old jested.

Among the panel who spoke at the event were Dr. Come Carpentier de Gourdon , an expert in the fields of philosophy of History and science and new technologies related to energy generation, Professor C.K Raju, a computer scientist, mathematician, educator, physicist and polymath researcher, Professor Pierluigi Luisi, the Italian chemistry professor, author of many research papers on purpose of life within the structure and function of life, and Professor K. Ramasubramanium, a leading academic in the field of Astronomical mathematics and ancient Indian philosophies. Former Kalon Tripa (Tibetan PM) Prof Samdhong Rinpoche and Director Library for Tibetan Works and Archive , Ven. Geshe Lhakdor, were also present.

Ven. Geshe Lhakdor, speaking on the need for such initiatives, told reporters, “The purpose of an event like this is to reach towards the truth of the matters through analyzing and discussing scientific approaches and ancient philosophies. Many of us commit ourselves without knowing the truth in things and simply submitting and believing blindly. By understanding the truth behind things, we tend to alleviate our grasp of perspectives thereby bettering ourselves and others in the process.”
