Dalai Lama congratulates Shinzo Abe on victory in Japanese general elections/ENG

DHARAMSHALA, Oct. 27: After securing what pundits called a “super majority” in the Japanese general elections over the weekend, Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama congratulated the incumbent Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on his victory.

The Tibetan leader in a letter addressed to Abe said that his re-election to the helm of Japanese polity should reaffirm the hope and aspirations placed by the Japanese people and that his office should employ “dialogue and diplomacy” to tackle the issues of his government.

The octogenarian Tibetan leader wrote, “Your call for worldwide nuclear disarmament during the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the first atomic bomb being dropped on Hiroshima was a similar step in the right direction. I hope to see vigorous efforts being made to achieve a world without nuclear weapons.”

“This year's award of the Nobel Peace Prize to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) is a powerful message marking recognition of the urgency of putting an end to the threat that these weapons pose to humanity,” he further wrote.

Shinzo Abe, 63, the leader of Liberal Democratic Party is now the third longest serving Prime Minister in post-war Japan. His party won two- thirds of the votes in the snap-Japanese general election.

The Dalai Lama and Abe last met in November 2012 when he was a member of the Japanese Parliament. "We lawmakers here are in complete agreement that we want to help the suffering Tibetan people and help create a Tibet in which people do not have to kill themselves in a quest for freedom," he said during the Dalai Lama’s visit to Tokyo then.
