Tackle destructive emotions to achieve peace: Dalai Lama at Goa/ENG

DHARAMSHALA, Aug. 9: Exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama on Wednesday said that key to achieving peace in the world begins at individual level by tackling destructive emotions. The Tibetan leader was delivering the key note speech on “Today’s Relevance of India’s Ancient Knowledge” at the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Goa Institute of Management (GIM).

He said, “We can achieve peace of mind if we tackle our destructive emotions, so the goal of making the 21st century an era of peace and compassion is feasible. It will involve finding solutions to problems in dialogue, not the use of force.”

To that effect, the Dalai Lama said, peace on a global level is achievable through demilitarization and planned elimination of nuclear weapons which would come through the “sense of inner disarmament”.

He also said that negative emotions can affect decision making, and with more consequences at higher levels by referencing an anecdote of India’s first PM Jawaharlal Nehru. “Gandhi ji very much was willing to give prime ministership to Jinnah. But Pandit Nehru refused. I think Pandit Nehru was little bit self-centred. If Mahatma Gandhi’s (wish) materialised, then Indo-Pakistan (would have been) united. Pandit Nehru, I know very well, very experienced person, very wise, but sometimes mistakes also happen,” the seasoned Tibetan leader said.

A staunch advocate for the reinvention of the modern education system to include ethics and moral principles to make it more holistic and relevant, the Dalai Lama said, “Until about 200 years ago, education was the province of religious institutions, which were responsible for instilling a sense of moral principles in their followers. Since education and religious establishments parted company this responsibility has lapsed. We all need moral principles for our own peace of mind, so they should be part of our education. I believe that only in India can modern education be combined with ancient Indian knowledge of the mind and emotions.”

The Tibetan leader this morning reached Bengaluru city after concluding his schedule in Goa.
