DHARAMSHALA, September 13: In order to have a better and peaceful future, we must create humanity with more compassion, said the Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama at a public talk at Jahrhunderthalle convention center in Frankfurt, Germany today.

Interacting with students from over 60 schools, the Dalai Lama said, “Creating compassionate humanity does not mean becoming a believer or adopting Buddhism. I have always stressed that people should keep their traditional faith. Changing religion is not easy and meanwhile we can always learn from each other.”

His Holiness, pointing to the young students who have joined him on the stage, stressed that the irrespective of believer or non-believer, the responsibility of creating a more peaceful world falls on the younger generation. He also suggested that if efforts were made now, they would certainly get to see a more peaceful world their lifetime.

In response to a question on ‘What can we young people do for a better world’, he said, “It is difficult to have a immediate change to the problems we are facing but we have to change these things and it could be done through education. The existing education system is not adequate and more oriented towards material values and paying less attention on the inner values.”

The 82-year-old spiritual leader added that historically religious institutions took care of the educating on ethics. However, he believes that secular ethics or education on moral principle should be taught in schools as part of curriculum.

“So in the next 20-30 years, we will see positive changes when generations and leaders come through such education system. We cannot blame the present leaders as they have come through the existing education based on materialism,” the Dalai Lama said.

The Nobel Peace Laureate, acknowledging the asylum Germany has provided to refugees, praised German Chancellor Angela Merkel for being ‘compassionate’ about those people fleeing sufferings and violence in their countries.

Currently on his four nation Europe trip, the Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama last week launched new German and Italian language websites (de.dalailama.com and it.dalailama.com).
