DHARAMSHALA, September 6: In his interaction with students from the University of California, San Diego, and a group from Mumbai at his private residence in Dharamshala, His Holiness the Dalai Lama said that the ‘real beauty’ of a human being is seen through a smile expressed with warmheartedness.

“It should not be a diplomatic smile or sarcastic smile. They are different smiles. So, smile out of love and respect as it brings trust,” the Tibetan spiritual leader added.

“Being a social animal, we need friendships that are entirely based on trust and trust comes from sincere attitude and care for others,” the Dalai Lama said adding that Tibetan Buddhist psychology have all come from Nalanda masters of India, which is a second home to Tibetans.

His Holiness also talked about his commitments of reviving the ancient Indian psychology or knowledge in India, not as religion but as academic subjects such as logic and psychology.

“We have been studying hygiene for physical health but now we need hygiene of emotion. Therefore, some lesson on hygiene of emotion must be included in our modern education system, which is oriented towards materialism,” the Dalai Lama said reminding the relevance of ancient Indian knowledge on human emotions to the Indian audience.

The Dalai Lama advised that the best antidote for self-centered attitude is taking care of others and showing them love, which eventually leads to the destruction of negative emotion such as anger, hatred and jealousy.

Earlier this year, His Holiness gave the keynote address at the commencement ceremony of UC San Diego despite protests from Chinese students.
