DHARAMSHALA, July 17: His Holiness the Dalai Lama, at a meeting this morning at Tsuglagkhang with a group of medical students from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, said compassion is indispensable for a good doctor.

His Holiness advised the group of one doctor and nine medical students on the oneness of humanity, compassion, the study of mind, and the importance of according respect to everyone.

He said, “Although the west has done an advanced study of the physical body, it is important to study the human emotion.”

He said a smile on the face of doctors and nurses go a long way in bringing peace of mind to the patients. “A stern expression and an attitude of carrying out one’s practice strictly as professional cast doubts in the patient,” he added.

He recounted his own experience at hospitals, saying doctors and nurses expressing human emotions make him feel safe and encouraged the students to take care of the patient’s psychology also.

Christopher Morris, one of the students in the audience said being in His Holiness’ presence helped him live in the moment and that he hopes to carry the life lessons imparted today throughout his medical practice for the rest of his life.
The group in the past week had visited monasteries in and around Dharamshala conducted medical, dental and eye checkup of monks and nuns.

The group also collected donations to raise money to help serious patients consult bigger hospitals.

The social service is organized jointly by Tulane University School of Medicine and social work and educational center of Lha Charitable Trust based in Dharamshala.
