DHARAMSHALA, MAY 14: His Holiness the Dalai Lama told the participants of the 12th General Body Meeting of the Tibetan Women’s Association that they should be proud of the Tibetan heritage and the “wealth” Tibet has to offer to the world in form of the Buddhist philosophy.

The 82 year old Tibetan leader said women have been scientifically proven to be more sensitive towards others’ sufferings and thus more compassionate biologically.

The Tibetan leader also told the Tibetan women about his commitment towards promotion of compassion independent of religious belief. “As mothers, you have a special responsibility to instill the sense of compassion and love in your children. I loved my mother very much because she was a very compassionate woman. Not one day had I ever seen my mother with an angry face. But my father was not as compassionate,” he said.

He said children must be taught the importance of compassion as part of education but without any religious connotations.

He also said Tibetan Buddhism and its teachings have the potential to be comparable to science, emphasizing that it can benefit a lot of people around the world.

In a rare moment, he recalled his escape from Norbulingka in March 1959 saying he wondered if he would see the next day’s sun.

He also talked about the initial days of exile and the initiatives towards introducing democracy to the Tibetan people. He also said that the very reason for starting separate school for Tibetan children was to preserve the Tibetan language and culture.

The Tibetan leader also met with a delegation of Indian parliamentary committee on official language at his residence here in Dharamsala.

The Tibetan leader welcomed them to Dharamsala which he called his second home' or 'permanent residence'.
