DHARAMSHALA, Feb. 18: Tibetan leader and Buddhist teacher, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, said that women should be at the forefront when it comes to promoting basic human values in the 21st century. The Dalai Lama was speaking to a group of Indian women from the Young FICCI Ladies Organisation (YFLO), a women’s right collective at his residence here today.
“Regarding compassion and loving kindness, physically women are more sensitive to other’s pain. Now in 21st century, we should make a special effort to promote human loving-kindness. In that regard, women should take more active role particularly in the education field for the promotion of deeper human values,” the 83-year old said.
The Tibetan leader also urged women to take up leadership roles in fields such as politics adding that it could have positive impact on the entire world. He also drew reference to former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi who was the first woman in modern India’s political history to hold the highest office.
On a far basic level, women have the ability to mould the society, in that their motherhood can inspire more compassion and love to their child, the Buddhist teacher said, adding that he is a product of his mother’s kindness and love.
In his own community, the Dalai Lama said, there is precedence of women being held on the pinnacle citing the example of a reincarnate female spiritual master Samdhing Dorje Phagmo in ancient Tibet. In modern times, he said that he has made it accessible for nuns to be at par with monks when it comes to acquiring monastic and religious education even till the highest of levels.
The Dalai Lama also reiterated that even when it concerned his own reincarnation, if circumstances require for the next reincarnation of the Dalai Lama to be a female, the next may very well be a woman.
