DHARAMSHALA, Dec. 8: His Holiness the Dalai Lama yesterday (Dec. 7) in an interview to Trans Asia News Services said that the prevailing censorship in China over numerous mediums is tantamount to the Chinese government fooling its people and is ‘immoral’.

He remarked that he admires the Chinese people for their hard work and that they have the right to “access accurate information” to decide for themselves from right to wrong. China’s heavy handedness in all aspects of life in the country from media, culture, religion, politics and other mediums has drawn ire from world over.

The Dalai Lama drew comparisons of China to that of the biggest democracy in the world India, his home for the last few decades saying it is growing in economy but more importantly you can express your views freely.

The Tibetan spiritual leader also visited the campus of National Institute of Mental Health & Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru. Long time supporter of Tibet and Hollywood actor Richard Gere spoke briefly on the ground breaking work done by one of His Holiness’s initiative ‘Mind and Life Institute’ and regarded the Dalai Lama as “one of the giants of our time”.

Speaking on the topic of mental health, the Dalai Lama said, “We have a marvelous brain, but we have to use it properly. A scientific approach is to be skeptical, to research and experiment. This is a method I admire and which I believe accords with the stance of the Nalanda masters of the past. Ancient Indian psychology is highly developed, while modern psychology has not yet caught up.

"We need to examine and analyze this to see what is relevant for us today. Modern science has thoroughly examined the material world, while Buddhist science possesses profound understanding of the working of the mind and emotions.”

While explaining that the parameters of science calls for tangible and conclusive measures, he said it also lacks in reach when it comes to phenomenon that has not yet been grasped by modern science. “Modern scientific research depends on the use of instruments to see and measure the object of investigation. This can’t easily be done with the mind."

The Tibetan leader said that not being able to see something doesn’t necessarily mean it doesn’t exist. He said not sufficient attention has been paid so far to the distinction between sensory consciousness and conceptual consciousness and the differing effects they have on the brain.

The Tibetan leader today arrived in Mundgod Tibetan settlement to consecrate the Gaden Trithok, and left after a luncheon reception for Hunsur Rabgyal Ling Tibetan settlement where he is scheduled to give teachings.

He will give teachings on Tsongkhapa's In Praise of Dependent Origination (tendrel toepa) and Destiny Fulfilled (tokjoe dunlekma) & 7th Dalai Lama's Four Mindfulnesses on the Middle Way View (tatri denpa shiden) on the afternoon of December 9. He will confer the Guhyasamaja Initiation (sangwang dupa wang) on December 10 & 11.

He will give teachings on the Eight Great Tantric Commentaries of Gyudmey Monastery (megyud trichen gya) on December 12 at Gyudmey Monastery. On the morning of December 13, a long life offering ceremony will be offered to His Holiness by Gyudmey Monastery.
