DHARAMSHALA, January 5: The Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama today, at the start of his three day teaching for Indian devotees in Bodh Gaya, said that his followers should accept the teachings of Buddha after thorough examination and not simply out of faith.

“The fact that Buddha himself have asked his followers to examine his teaching and not to accept out of faith is very special,” the Dalai Lama said on the first day of the teaching on ‘Dharmachakra Parivaretan - Sutra on The Four Noble Truths’ and ‘Sutra on Dependent Origination’.

Explaining how Buddhism is an Indian tradition having its roots in India, the Dalai Lama expressed his profound happiness to have this opportunity to address to Indian Buddhist devotees in such a large number.

“I am glad because Buddhism was founded in India, the Nalanda masters were from India and their teachings are mostly in Sanskrit and few in Pali. These teachings are Indian tradition and should be preserved by Indians,” the 82-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader said.

The Dalai Lama has often stated that one of his main goals is to revive the ancient Indian tradition in India. His Holiness expressed his pleasure on knowing about the increased interest towards Buddhism amongst general public and Indian scientists as well.

“Irrespective of believer or non-believer, theistic or non-theistic, every major religion professes love and compassion. For thousands of years India has been a home to all the major religions and existing harmoniously, which is commendable,” the Nobel peace laureate said, adding that India can be a role model to the world regarding the concept of secularism.

While praising the practice of concept of secularism in India, His Holiness also expressed his disapproval of the conflict created on the basis of different religious faith. He said, “It is disgraceful if religion also starts to add to that problem on top of all the existing problems.”

The Tibetan spiritual leader will also be giving a 3-day teaching on Nagarjuna’s Commentary on Bodhicitta and Gyalsey Thokme Sangpos’s Thirty-Seven Practices of a Bodhisattva from January 14-16. His Holiness will also confer the Avalokiteshvera Initiation on the mornings of January 15 and 16.

Following the initiation on January 16, a long life offering ceremony to His Holiness will be made at the joint request of Lamyn Gegeen Tenzinjamphelchoijisheinen Tulku of Mongolia and Namgyal Monastery.
