DHARAMSHALA, May 20: The Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama in an interaction with group of students from three different institutions said that Tibet-China relation needs a cultural revolution motivated by compassion.

The first [Cultural Revolution] was motivated by anger and hatred. What is needed now is a cultural revolution motivated by compassion. More honesty and truthfulness will lead to less suffering and more kindness and compassion will lead to less anger,” the Dalai Lama said in a response to a question in relation to China at Ganden Phodrang, His residence in Dharamsala on May 19.

Attended by students from the University of Minnesota, University of Guelph, Canada, and students of Tong Len, the Tibetan Nobel Laureate focused on Secular Ethics and urged the 21 Century generation to work towards creating a more peaceful world and to resolve problems inherited from the previous century.

“You’ll have to work to create a more peaceful world. But since basic human nature is compassionate, there is hope. If our basic nature was anger, there would be none,” the Dalai Lama said.

Appreciating the social work being carried out by Tong Len taking care of the displaced communities and spreading awareness on secular ethics with their programs such as Secular Ethics Yatra and Marketing Secular Ethics, the Dalai Lama said that it was wonderful that Tong Len is putting his ‘vision into action’.

“You are showing how we can share the idea of ethics with others, without having to rely on this or that religious tradition, but based on common experience and human values,” the octogenarian spiritual leader said.

During the interaction His Holiness expressed the need to make people more aware of inner values on the basis of scientific findings, common sense and common experience.

“If we can also train people in secular ethics, we can put an end to problems like corruption, the gap between rich and poor, and social inequality as well. We can create a fairer and a more equal society,” the Dalai Lama said.
