DHARAMSHALA, Jan. 25: The President of the exile Tibetan government known officially as the Central Tibetan Administration Dr. Lobsang Sangay who is on a three nation tour in Europe testified before the Subcommittee on Human Rights of the European Parliament on Wednesday in Brussels, Belgium.

The head of the Tibetan polity detailed the cultural, social and economic discrimination his people experience under hard line Chinese policies and the deprivation of the rights that are provisioned in the constitution and by the Chinese law.

Dr. Sangay raised key issues related to Tibet including the much discussed issue of the Tibetan language rights advocate Tashi Wangchuk and the destruction of Buddhist learning institutes such as Larung Gar and Yarchen Gar where many of its inhabitants have been forcefully evicted and many structures demolished under the pretext of development.

The Tibetan President also reminded the European Parliament that there had been 151 Tibetans who have self-immolated calling for freedom in Tibet and the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama since 2009. He was reported as saying that on the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the human rights situation in Tibet has taken a turn for the worse.

Parliamentarian Pier Antonio Panzeri who chaired the meeting and Parliamentarian Laszlo Tokes, the Vice-Chair of the subcommittee assured support on Tibet’s endeavor to achieve genuine autonomy and minority rights as well as preservation of Tibetan language in Tibet, according to CTA run Tibet.net.

The Tibetan President previously attended the Tibet Interest Group (TIG) meeting at the European parliament, and met Speaker of Flemish Parliament Jan Peter Peumans and the Belgian Parliamentarian Sabina De Bethune as well as other prominent MEPs while on his official trip to Switzerland, Belgium and France.

Tibetans living in Europe flocked in hundreds and gave the Tibetan President rousing welcome at airports while some held peaceful protests against him holding placards that read, “Don’t misuse authority”, in an apparent protest over the termination of an official from his post recently.
