DHARAMSHALA, August 19: Congressman Jim McGovern, a long-time friend of Tibet, led a group of 72 United States’ Lawmakers in urging the US President Barack Obama to make Tibet a priority in the last months before ending his tenure and publicly support the ‘right of the Dalai Lama to return to Tibet’.

In a letter dated August 17 to the President, the Congressman and the lawmakers wrote, “We write to ask that you redouble efforts in support of the Tibetan people during your remaining months in office.”

The legislators appealed Obama to initiate “new creative strategies to encourage meaningful dialogue, protect Tibetan rights, and preserve their unique cultural, religious and linguistic identity.”

They also urged the Obama administration to call for the immediate and unconditional release of all Tibetan political prisoners held by China.

McGovern who in the past had called for opening up of US consulate in Lhasa reiterated the call saying the presence of a US consular office in Lhasa would be “critical for observing and addressing the obstacles to freedom of movement that affect both Tibetans within China, and US citizens, including Tibetan-Americans, who seek to travel to Tibetan areas of China.”

The letter while thanking the President for extending his support for the preservation of Tibet’s unique culture and tradition and protection of human rights and the fragile environment of the Tibetan Plateau stated that it is important to move beyond words to actions.

In November last year, McGovern along with the minority leader of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi led the first US delegation to Tibet in eight years.
