Phayul - Wednesday, December 21, 2005

Dharamshala December 21 - Declining to comment on the media reports about threats to the life of the Dalai Lama, the spiritual and temporal head of Tibet, the secretary of the exile government's Department of Security Ngodup Dongchung has told phayul that threats from Dorjee Shugden Society has been there for many years and that it is not a new matter. Reports of threats to the Dalai Lama's life have come up in a few websites and a Hindi television channel. Newindpress, a web portal based in Chennai, reported that local police had received an alert from the Dalai Lama's chief security officer that "a seven-member extremist team from Tibet" had left for Amaravati with an ill intent. "The Tibetan authorities informed us that these persons might attempt to assassinate him during his stay in Amravati," newKerela.com quoting a police official as saying. India TV reported that photos of 7 Tibetans associated with the Dorjee Shugden Society were sent to the police in Amaravati, the site for the 30th Kalachakra initiation by the 14th Dalai Lama. The police of Andhra Pradesh is on a high alert following the reported threat. The 7 Tibetans were allegedly involved in the murder of the director of Institute of Buddhist Dialectics and two disciples in 1997.
