Dharamsala, August 4: A dispute over the origin of a particular breed of dog called Shih Tzu has been in contention since few days with the Shanghai based ‘China Canine Union’ pushing for the origin to be reclassified as China and not Tibet.
The ‘World Canine Organization’ had subsequently agreed the push and formally accepted the origin of the dog as China. However, the development has been challenged by UK based ‘The Kennel Club’ and ‘Shih Tzu Club’ who condemn this move. Miss Hazel Chadwich, the Coordinators of the Shi Tzu club told Daily Mail Online, “We are of the opinion that Shih-Tzus are Tibetan, not Chinese. The Shih-Tzus came from Tibet in the first place, then they went to the Chinese emperors from Tibet. Feeling among the club members is very strong about this”.
The Committee had included a plea to maintain factual credibility to the World Canine Organization when it comes to origin of breeds and that integrity regarding accurate information should be of utmost importance.
The World Canine Organization issued a press release yesterday with highlight to reclassification of the origin of not only the Shih Tzu breed but the Tibetan Mastiff, Tibetan spaniel, Tibetan terrier and Lhasa apso as “Tibet (China)”.
An elderly Tibetan woman fond of raising dogs said that the seemingly harmless and petty issue of phrasing Tibet with China in the bracket by the WCO allow conventional notion of Tibet being considered a part of China, “It’s a shame that the Chinese are not even leaving the dogs to be stamped under some sort of label, they are still relentless after committing countless atrocities in Tibet, some of which I have personally witnessed with my own eyes,” she added.
The issue of historical facts over a 27cm dog seems trivial with China being the host of animal cruelty such as the ‘Yulin Festival’ held annually where dogs and cats are butchered in hellish ways and consumed under the pretext of ‘food festival’. The Yulin 2015 saw more than 6000 dogs being brutally killed and consumed despite uproar and movements from around the world condemning it.
