Two laymen set fire to themselves
Sonam, 24, and Choephak Kyap, 25, who are cousins, self-immolated together today in front of Jonang Dzamthang monastery. The immolations took place at 14.20 local time in Barma Township, Dzamthang County, Ngaba, Eastern Tibet. Security forces were quickly mobilised to the township.

Both men died and their families were ordered by the authorities to cremate them at approximately 1 am local time. Several thousand Tibetans gathered at the cremation site, including monks who had travelled from other monasteries.

Also in Barma, security forces shot dead a young man, Urgen, in January and in February a lay teenager, Nangdrol, died after setting fire to himself in front of the monastery.
