DHARAMSHALA, April 23: More than 2000 Tibetans carried out a mass protest in Kardze, eastern Tibet on April 15, according to information received by Phayul.

An exile monk Thupten Choephel, who has contacts in the region said the Tibetans were demanding the release of around 250 Tibetans who were arrested a day earlier on April 14.

In a release today, the Dharamshala based rights group, Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy said the Tibetans were arrested after Chinese authorities ordered the closure of a locally founded Tibetan organisation called the ‘Dayul Unity Association.’

“On April 14, 2012, around 300 Kardze (Chinese: Ganzi) County police officers and People’s Armed Police visited the nomadic village of Da-thama (also known as Da-yul), and ordered the closure of an organisation called “Da-yul Thundin Tsogpa” (English: Da-yul’s Unity Association) in Kardze County, Kardze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province,” TCHRD said in its release.

Da-Yul Thundrul Tsogpa was founded in 2008 by a group of prominent Tibetans from 13 different villages in the region with the mission to “promote unity and safeguard general welfare” of the local Tibetan community members.

“Besides looking after the local community members, the welfare association is said to be working in creating harmony, friendship and unity among the Tibetans in the region,” Dukthen Kyi, a researcher at TCHRD told Phayul.

Chinese officials were reportedly suspicious of the Association organising political activities and termed it “illegal.”

Local Tibetans expressed their disagreement with the Chinese ban orders and protested against the police actions.

“Immediately, the county police officers and the People’s Armed Police started beating the Tibetans,” TCHRD said in its release. “More than 10 Tibetans were injured and hospitalised, according to sources. Among them, seven have been identified as Kyachen, Gyaltsen, Kyatse, Choepa, Kyatho, Kyaree.”

Dhontoh, the head of the association was arrested along with hundreds of others.

“Following the mass protests the next day, majority of those arrested were released but 33 Tibetans are still in Chinese detention,” Choephel said.

According to TCHRD, following the mass protest, Chinese authorities have “blocked all means of communication” in the area, making it difficult to get more information on the situation inside Kardze.

Kardze has witnessed repeated protests since the mass uprisings of 2008. Last October, Dawa Tsering a 38 year-old monk from Kardze Monastery set himself ablaze shouting slogans for the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama from exile and the re-unification of the Tibetan people.
