DHARAMSHALA, August 17: The global outcry over the mass arrest and interrogation of lawyers, legal activists and human rights crusaders in China last month is yet to quell amid reports of ‘torture’ and ‘incommunicado detention’ of over 20 people who are still held in custody by the government.

Condemnation and fresh protests continue pointing towards the government operation that targeted and labeled over 200 individuals as “major criminal gang” who were alleged to be plotting to up heave “social stability”, according to media reports.

Chinese lawyers, expatriates, students and locals protested in front of the Washington Chinese consulate last week while the 19th U.S-China Human Rights Dialogue was in session. The protesters criticized the deteriorating human rights situation in China demanding release of those among whom are ‘legal assistants, trainee lawyers, and the leader of a Christian group,’ according to the Human Rights Lawyer Concern Group based in Hong Kong.

The Chinese government crackdown that began July 10 targeted prominent human rights lawyers, well known legal activists and a handful of NGO’s that worked for LGBT (lesbian gay bisexual transsexuals), HIV and AIDs, women’s right and labor rights.

Those currently held are dealt with tactics such as pre trial televised confessions to humiliate and marginalize them from their community although such actions are widely known to be performed under extreme coercion, alleges right groups.

The American Bar Association, in a statement released last week, said, “The ABA encourages the Chinese Government to permit lawyers to discharge their professional duty to assure achievement of the fair and just legal system that the Communist Party has promised to all its citizens. The ABA also urges the many foreign legal organizations, universities, NGOs and government agencies that have been cooperating with Chinese counterparts in advancing the rule of law to continue their collaboration, and encourages other foreign institutions that are objecting to the current treatment of lawyers in China to join in supporting those lawyers and cooperating with China.” the statement mentioned. “

The incident which is one of the most ‘high handed’ attempts by the Chinese politburo to trim human rights scenario in the mainland takes away much of the claim to “achieve government under a just rule of law” endorsed so vehemently at last year’s fourth plenary session of the Communist Party's central committee.
