Tibetans and their supporters urge world leaders and the public to stand up
for Tibet

Toronto – On May 26, around 3:30 pm, Members of Students for a Free Tibet
Canada, Tibetan-Canadians, and their supporters staged a flash mob “die-in”
in downtown Toronto to draw attention to the human rights crisis in Tibet.
Around thirty people spontaneously lied on the pavement at the busy
intersection of Yonge and Dundas, at Eaton Centre, Union Station and Nathan
Phillips Square to represent the dire situation in Tibet with China’s
ongoing repression. Tibetan flags and a banner that read ‘Tibet Needs You
Now’ accompanied the protest.

“This action represents the urgency of the human rights crisis in Tibet
where since January alone 22 Tibetans have self-immolated, lighting
themselves on fire to draw attention to China’s repression in Tibet,” said
Urgyen Badheytsang, National Director of Students for a Free Tibet Canada.
This action is one of many taking place globally today, including a rally
in Vienna, Austria, where His Holiness the Dalai Lama joined thousands of
people to stand in solidarity with Tibetans in Tibet.

“The “die-in” in Toronto is our way of showing that Tibetan-Canadians and
our supporters are united with the global Tibet movement in our effort to
highlight China’s atrocities in Tibet and the Tibetan people’s demand to be
free,” said Urgyen. "Today, people around the world have stood in
solidarity and called on our global leaders to stand together and take
coordinated action to help secure a just and fair resolution for the
Tibetan people, so that they can live their lives with the rights and
freedom they have sacrificed so much to achieve,” he said.

Students for a Free Tibet is an international grassroots network that works
to advance the movement for Tibetans’ fundamental right to political
freedom. The organization is at the forefront of Tibet’s non-violent
movement and is known for its creative, strategic and dynamic campaigns and
its commitment to training young people and students in the art of
leadership and non-violent action and strategy.
