DHARAMSHALA, April 9: A Tibetan filmmaker will debut at the world’s most prestigious film festival, the annual Cannes Film Festival.

Tsering Tashi Gyalthang’s short film “Turtle Soup” will be screened among the top 20 films at the 65th Cannes film festival's Short Film Corner (May 16-27).

The Short Film Corner proposes films from all over the world, most previously unseen, as well as the films included in the Official Competition, the Cinéfondation, the Director's Fortnight and Critic's Week.

Chosen by producers and directors to present their films, the Short Film Corner is considered as the “essential rendezvous” for filmmakers.

“Turtle Soup,” directed by Tsering Tashi, an alumnus of the Tibetan Children’s Village School, Dharamshala and produced by Yeti group, a creative studio specialising in films, animation, and motion designs based in Saigon, Vietnam, previously won multiple awards at international film festivals.

The short film won third prize in the Best Film category at the Canon International 48 Hour Film Project held in early March at the Taos Art Museum and Fechin House in New Mexico, USA. The festival had attracted more than 100 short films from around the world.

The film also received the Honourable Mention for Writing award.

“Turtle Soup” had won the first prize at the Ho Chi Minh City segment of the Canon 48HFP last December winning many other prizes, including, best film, best cameraman, best editing, best trailer, best use of characters and best graphic.

Described as “a simple story with the language of cinema,” the “Turtle Soup” is a heist film about two street kids who want to rescue a turtle from a restaurant.

"Many think of heist as diamonds, jewellery or money but our group wanted to make a distinction. Imagine kids rescuing animals from a restaurant tank," director Gyalthang told reporters.

Tashi Tsering’s earlier short film “The River” was the winner of the Special Jury Award at the 48 Hour Project Vietnam 2010.
