DHARAMSHALA, April 10: A Tibetan teen studying in the United Sates has been selected as a Global Teen Leader for the year 2012. Teens from 37 countries were in the fray for the international recognition.

Namgyal Wangchuk Lhagyari, 19, was announced as one of the thirty Global Teen Leaders for 2012.

“It is an honour to be identified and accepted as a Tibetan,” Namgyal Wangchuk, the son of former political prisoner, the late Lha Gyari Namgyal Gyatso, said.

Award organiser, We Are Family Foundation’s Three Dot Dash Initiative chose the Tibetan teen for his “leadership and vision” in contributing to a more peaceful world through his awareness campaigns on Tibet.

Speaking to Phayul, Namgyal said he is feeling the pressure of living up to the title of a Global Teen Leader. However, Namgyal asserted that he felt “fortunate” to have been given the grand opportunity to discuss and talk about the ongoing critical situation inside Tibet.

“The many students to whom I have spoken and shown pictures of the multiple self-immolations and lockdown in Tibet, are really sympathetic with our cause,” Namgyal said. “I had been told by many that it’s an eye opener for them.”

“I believe that this process of talking to people and sharing our story is a long drawn out one, but if we try hard enough, then it surely will yield results,” Namgyal added.

The only recognised direct descendant of the great Kings of Tibet, Namgyal was coronated in June 2004, during a ceremony presided over by Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

In 2008, Namgyal began work on his first directorial debut “My Country is Tibet,” a documentary about how Tibetans live their lives and balance their religion with their sense of identity. Since then, the film has been screened at multiple events, including the 34th Asian American International Film Festival and the 2011 Action on Film International Film Festival in Pasadena, California.

As a Global Teen Leader, the Three Dot Dash has provided Namgyal with a mentor and a small stipend for one year to further develop his work in film making.
