DHARAMSHALA, April 25: A Dharamshala based Tibetan NGO today celebrated the birthday of a highly venerated spiritual leader His Holiness the Panchen Lama who has been held incommunicado for over two decades by China.

One of the largest Tibetan NGOs, Tibetan Womens’ Association held a modest ceremony at the McLeod Ganj main square where a birthday cake was shared among locals and tourists. TWA said that the practice to celebrate the birthday of the true Panchen Lama Gendun Choekyi Nyima is observed in earnest veneration and expressed hopes for the release of “the youngest political prisoner in the world”.

While the mood was celebratory, TWA President Dolma Yangchen said that the core demands for the release of the Tibetan spiritual figure is never sidestepped. “We have been campaigning for the release of the Panchen Lama ever since he was abducted at the age of 6 by Chinese authorities. As always we call on the Chinese government to at least move in the right direction to provide details of his current whereabouts and conditions, and ultimately release him,” Yangchen told the media.

She further said that the case of Panchen Lama has received impetus lately with some members of the free world talking about him on the global stage. She said, “The recent call by the Commissioner of the United States Commission (USCIRF) Tenzin Dorjee to release the Panchen Lama is an encouraging development. We hope to see a coordinated effort among the leaders of the free world to exert pressure on China to release the Tibetan spiritual leader. We hope China will take heed of the growing global concern towards our beloved Panchen Lama.”

Meanwhile, the Students for a Free Tibet, India, collaborated with Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in in setting a world record of "Most Candles Lit on a Birthday Cake."

The Panchen Lama turned 29 today, and to bring international attention to his continued status as a captive political prisoner, Students for a Free Tibet teamed up with Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in India highlight the plight of the prominent Tibetan religious figure,

"We broke the previous world record of 72,585 candles lit, and are now waiting to receive official recognition from the Guinness World Records Organization," said Tenzin Tselha, National Director, SFT India.

The 11th Panchen Lama Gendun Choekyi Nyima was recognized as the reincarnation of his predecessor by His Holiness the Dalai Lama on May 14, 1995. Days later, the Dalai Lama endorsed candidate was abducted by China from his home and have never been seen since. Contrary to centuries old custom of recognizing the reincarnation of a learned spiritual leader, China appointed their own candidate who holds the title of the Panchen Lama in occupied Tibet.
