44. Tibetan Environment NGO on Eco-Friendly Mission

Phayul - Tuesday, December 20, 2005

TESI Environmental Awareness Movement (TEAM) today began its month long environmental leadership and awareness program to make the 30th Kalachakra at Amaravati a 'nature-friendly spiritual gathering'. A press release issued here by TESI says that it will use the presence of a large number of devotees to raise environmental awareness through youth empowerment, leadership and service training in ecological issues. TEAM will also distribute 10 different kinds of brochures and posters during the event, alongside an exhibition on endangered species of Tibet with special emphasis on the current realities of tigers, leopards, otters and foxes in our world. TEAM members, including 5 staff and 30 Tibetan students from four different schools, started their journey today from Dharamshala to Amaravati where they will be involved in environmental leadership workshops and will involve in environmental activism and leadership initiatives. All of these students, most of whom are born in Tibet, are members of green clubs in their respective schools, says Tsering Yankey, the Executive Director of the organization. "These environmental leadership trainees will not only receive a series of Earth Steward workshop, but will engage in hands on daily Earth service projects such as door-to door awareness raising campaigns on endangered species and waste management, daily trash patrolling of Kalachakra area, daily clean-up of Kalachakra site along with other volunteers, and other public outreach works during the entire period of Kalachakra." TEAM will also support these students to form environmental clubs in their respective schools to start a tradition of student environmental activism in Tibetan communities. Yankey believes that overlooking the Tibetan traditional wisdom of subsistence living, people these days adopt a greed-driven throwaway culture. "If unchecked, hundreds and thousands of Styrofoam cups and paper plates may be used and thrown away without any consideration for public health or wastage of resources. "These days, such practices are common at Tibetan ceremonial functions including religious ceremonies, picnics, weddings, and other gatherings." With the help of student volunteers, TEAM will educate the pilgrims about the basic environmental concept of waste management, such as the concept of 4 R's -- Refuse, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, implications of using or burning hazardous products like plastic bags, Styrofoam products, plastic bottles, PVC pipes used as tea-churner, and the like. "An event like this which attracts tens of thousands of people for a short period of time inflicts heavy environmental toll in the local area," said Yangkey. "TEAM will request the devotees to adapt their lifestyles and behavior so that the local environment and people of Amravati would not have to pay the price of our negligence and indifferent attitude." The Kalachakra also provides an ideal occasion to rekindle Tibetan people's spiritual connection towards nature. Tesi Environmental Awareness Movement (TEAM) is a newly established non-profit and non-governmental organization set up to revive the ecological consciousness of the Tibetan people by reminding them of their ancient values of interdependent nature of all life forms and to introduce them to modern, sustainable and pro-nature ways of living. TEAM is the first effort of its kind by young Tibetans in exile working to promote environmental education and conservation work.
