DHARAMSHALA, October 2: Thriving Buddhism in exile, in Tibet, around the world and in China reflects the vision of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the resilience of the Tibetan people, said CTA President (Sikyong) Lobsang Sangay at the 30th Founding Anniversary of Tibetan Nuns Project at Dolma Ling Nunnery in Sidhpur near here today.

Sikyong Sangay said that his response to questions about the Tibet’s chance of success against a powerful China is ‘Yes’ since Tibetans are from the mountains with mountain spirit and mountain of determination. He said, “China has destroyed Buddhism in Tibet and we have revived it in Tibet and also in China. Similarly with our cause, we do believe that we will triumph in fulfilling the vision of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.”

President Sangay also said that Chinese leader Mao Zedong must be ‘frustrated’ in his grave seeing Buddhism thriving in Tibet with over 12,000 monks and nuns in Larung Gar and over 6,000 nuns in Yarchen Gar (both under China’s demolition drive to reduce monastic populace) and also seeing over 300 million Chinese embracing Buddhism.

“All the sponsors of the Tibetan Nuns Project, you are part of the grand vision of reviving the very foundation of Tibetan civilization, a rich and an ancient civilization, from the ashes of destruction,” Sikyong said while thanking them for their contributions.

Along with the celebration of the anniversary of Tibetan Nuns Project, today also marks the beginning of the Inter nunnery debate session (Jang Gunchoe).

Director Rinchen Khando Choegyal also made an announcement that a new ‘Tantric Study Program’ for Geshemas have been approved by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who wishes nun scholars to have highest academic degree in Buddhist studies.

Geshema Delek Dolma, also a chant master, has been with the project since its humble beginning in a rented house to the flourished Dolma Ling Nunnery. Speaking to Tibetan media, she said, “Nuns joining in today’s time have comparatively better facilities in terms of education and accommodation. We have labored through many obstacles during our initial days with limited resources and often worked late to move the earth and roads for construction.”

The chant master shared that she began learning Tibetan and study Buddhism only after coming into exile in the early 1990s.

Currently, under the Tibetan Nuns Project there are over 700 nuns in various nunneries including Shugsep Nunnery, Gaden Choeling Nunnery, Tilokpur Nunnery, Sakya Nuns Institute and Sherab Choeling Nunnery. The project also helps nuns not living in nunneries and those on retreats.
