DHARAMSHALA, May 19: Ahead of his first visit to Washington DC since the formation of the new government, the President of Central Tibetan Administration (Sikyong) Dr. Lobsang Sangay expressed optimism over President Donald Trump meeting with Tibetan Spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

“We (Tibetans) remain hopeful that President Trump will continue the tradition of US President meeting with His Holiness,” the Harvard educated Tibetan president said. “The new government is settling down as far as foreign policy is concerned. As it settles down and when the Dalai Lama visits Washington DC, which is not in the near future, but it happens there will be meeting between His Holiness and President Trump.”

He is scheduled to visit the US capital from May 22 – 25 for official meetings and engagements with US members of Congress and Senators to advocate on Tibet issue and to discuss further plan of action from CTA.

“The main aim is to meet with US lawmakers who have been supportive towards our struggle and to advocate on Tibet issue including seeking support for the Middle Way Approach, Tibet-China Dialogue and spread awareness,” the Tibetan president said.

The 48-year-old leader would also be meeting members of the various NGOs and former government officials.

When House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi last led a delegation to Dharamshala in 2008, soon after the then US President Barack Obama met with the Dalai Lama in 2010 despite pressure from China.

“Like the precedent set by the four previous US presidents, I hope that the current President Donald Trump would meet the Dalai Lama. Moreover, Trump’s top diplomat, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has also expressed his wishes to meet His Holiness,” President Sangay said.

This visit would also feature further discussion on future objectives that they can both work on collectively for better outcome.

He leaves for the US tomorrow after attending the Indo Tibet Summit, organized by South & East Asia Foundation at Constitutional Club of India, New Delhi and will be returning to Dharamshala on May 27.
