DHARAMSHALA, August 11: Warning the world of China’s expansionist policy, President of Central Tibetan Administration (Sikyong) Dr. Lobsang Sangay said that China’s ploy in Doklam region is the ‘same template’ employed in Tibet during the 1950s and 60s. The Harvard educated Tibetan leader was speaking to ABC news in Australia where he is on a visit.

Explaining how building of roads in Tibet led to its occupation by China, President Sangay said, “What you see now is the same Confucius-based nationalist expansionist policy with all the neighboring countries. So I am here in Australia to remind the rest of the world that what happened to us could happen to you; in some sense its happening to you.”

He urged the world to be more ‘careful’ against China’s expansionist policy by citing numerous examples such as territorial disputes in South China Sea, East China Sea, Scarborough Island and Doklam.

Sikyong told the nation’s official public broadcaster that systematic discouragement of Tibetan language in schools and colleges in Tibet as ‘cultural assimilation’ turning Tibetans into Chinese.

“But the resilience and sense of solidarity of the Tibetan people are very strong. The third generation of Tibetans inside Tibet are asserting and protesting for Tibetan language, environmental, nomadic, farming rights. They also protest against Hydropower and mining,” he said adding that it is encouraging to see the younger generation coming forward and asserting their Tibetan identity given the repressive condition in Tibet.

He also said that in the last four years the situation of Tibet under Chinese President Xi Jinping’s has unfortunately gone worse.

Last week, Sangay had appealed to the Australian government to lobby for full autonomy for Tibet in China. Similarly, he reiterated that the Australian leader could follow the precedent set by the American leaders of supporting both One China Policy and the Middle Way Approach.

Tomorrow, he will be taking part in an interactive session with Chinese intellectuals, democracy activists and scholars. He would be meeting with members of Tibetan community and is scheduled to return to India on August 13.
