PRESS RELEASE

The reason for organising this International Conference on Sowa-Rigpa, is to present the Tibetan Science of Health and Wellbeing in its entirety. Understanding the value and quality of Sowa-Rigpa, a system having a very long history of its comprehensive practice and concept, it has been utilized for the mental and physical wellbeing of humankind irrespective of caste, creed, color, religion and nationality. During the reign of Tibetan Emperor Trison Duetsen (8th century) many medical scholars from the neighboring countries like India, China, Persia, Nepal etc gathered at Samye Monastery, Central Tibet, where the 1st world known International Conference on Medicine was held. Extensive and profound discussion on Medical practices, clinical experiences, literal concepts were carried out for days, months and years. In the 20th Century, an unfortunate but unprecedented political and religious transformation occurred in Tibet, when His Holiness the Dalai Lama had to flee to India after the brutal invasion of Tibet by China. He established Tibetan schools, Tibetan settlements and monastic institutions in exile with genuine support from the Government and people of India. Men-Tsee-Khang, Dharamsala was part of these establishments. Gradually Chapori Tibetan Medical College, Department of Sowa-Rigpa, CIHTS, Department of Sowa-Rigpa and Jyotish, CIBS, Leh, Ladakh were founded. Many Sowa-Rigpa practitioners were produced from these medical institutes for the service of human health around the world. Under the kind guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Central Council of Tibetan Medicine (CCTM) was established on Jan 5, 2004 after the ‘Tibetan Medicine Council Act, 2003’ was passed by the 13th Assembly of the Tibetan Parliament in Exile. Till date 5 Medical Colleges/Institutes, 467 Medical practitioners and 5 pharmacies have been registered under the Council (CCTM), Central Tibetan Administration.

Seeing the need for more interaction and exchange among the Sowa-Rigpa practitioners around the globe, the 2nd International Conference was held in Dharamsala in the year 2012, where 250 delegates from 21 different countries, participated. Carrying forward the legacy of such essential interface, this time Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies, Chagpori Tibetan Medical Institute and Central Council of Tibetan Medicine have come together to jointly organize the 3rd International Conference on Sowa Rigpa for 5 days from February 25 to March 1, 2018. We see this as a platform where scholars, practitioner, researchers and young talented students could meet and bridge the gap of the loopholes of Sowa-Rigpa practice.

The entire Conference is divided into various themes based on the urgency of the subjects which are;

Glimpse into the Three Great Medical Systems of Asia
Present Status of Sowa-Rigpa in Asian Countries
Clinical Management of Somatic Disorders
Clinical Management of Psychological Disorders
Pharmaceutics and Research
Advance Sowa-Rigpa Practice
Medico-Legal Issues
Materia-Medica and its Challenges
Hands-on Practical Training
The conference comprises of 6 Plenary Lectures, 28 Parallel Sessions, 14 Paper-presentations and one-day practical workshop with 5 sessions. 201 participants, 30 expert speakers and 14 paper presenters have assembled from 10 different countries around the world for this conference.
