11. Quake Jolts North India, Dharamshala

Phayul - Saturday, October 8, 2005

Dharamshala October 8 - A major earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale rocked North India, Pakistan and Afghanistan on Saturday forcing people to rush out of their residences. The quake also jolted Dharamshala and the nearby areas and lasted for about 15 seconds. However, no casualty or loss to property was reported from Dharamshala as of now. The life here in McLeod Ganj has returned back to normalcy. Dharamshala witnessed one of the worst ever earthquakes in April 1905 leaving thousands dead and homeless. The quake which was recorded at 9.25 am was felt in Delhi and adjoining areas in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kahsmir, Uttaranchal, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. The epicentre of the quake was located in west Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, Home Ministry sources said. The ministry's disaster control room had been activated and was monitoring the situation, the sources said. Reports coming in from Pakistan says that strong tremors also shook northern Pakistan, rocking buildings in the capital Islamabad, witnesses said. In Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, buildings shook and walls swayed for about a minute shortly before 9 am local time (0930 IST). Slight tremors continued afterward. Strong tremors were also felt in Afghanistan.
