DHARAMSHALA, July 17: The Speaker of the United States’ House of Representatives and veteran American politician Nancy Pelosi has condemned the incumbent Chinese President Xi Jinping for his government’s ruthless persecution of people for the practice of their faiths.

She was speaking at a discussion on religious freedom challenges in China and the importance of bipartisan, government approaches to defending religious freedom at the second annual Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom in Washington DC on Tuesday.

Pelosi called the Chinese President an “authoritarian of the most oppressive nature” who persecuted people for their beliefs and faith. She said that increasing number of nations are turning a blind eye to such violations to secure economic benefits from China. “Violations are of such scale and so big, and the commercial interests are so significant, that it sometimes tempers our values as to how we are to act on it,” said Pelosi.

China is considered one of the worst offenders of religious freedom in the world for its intense and consistent persecution of Tibetan Buddhists in occupied Tibet and the Muslims in Xinjiang region where authorities have put over a million people in re-education camps.

The same day, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo launching the three-day event, implored the participants and stakeholders to allow people to practice their faiths and beliefs. "All people from every place in the globe must be permitted practice faith openly in their homes, in their places of worship, in the public squares, and believe what they want to believe", he said.

Over 1000 representatives and delegations from close to 130 countries have participated in the ministerial organised by the United States Department of State. However, a prominent Canadian Muslim advocacy group, The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) has declined an invitation to attend an upcoming US government conference on religious freedom because of President Donald Trump's travel ban of several Muslim-majority countries.
