DHARAMSHALA, June 15: The Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama, currently on a 19 day US tour, is scheduled to meet the United States President Barack Obama today behind closed door at the White House on Wednesday.

"In the morning, the President will meet with His Holiness the Dalai Lama at the White House," a statement by White House mentioned yesterday.

Meanwhile. China already expressed its opposition to the United States leadership welcoming the Tibetan leader. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang earlier warned the US saying, "We demand the U.S. government earnestly stands by its promises, conscientiously handle the relevant issue in accordance with the one China principle and not give any space to any individual or behavior which tries to create two Chinas."

Beijing has on many occasions regarded meeting between the Dalai Lama whom it reviles as ‘a separatist’, and any world leader as meddling with their “internal matter” and even even threatened with trade and economic sanctions.

The meeting which will be the fourth between the two leaders will be held privately in the Map Room of the White House.

Democrat Leader and a staunch supporter of the Tibetan cause Nancy Pelosi welcomed the move likening the meeting "as a powerful tribute to the righteousness of the cause of Tibetan autonomy." "Any attempts on the part of the Chinese to dilute the population of Tibetans in Tibet are something that would be just really wrong. Just plain and simple: wrong. Again, a challenge to the conscience. If freedom-loving people do not speak out against oppression in Tibet, then we surrender all moral authority to speak on behalf of human rights anywhere in the world," Pelosi further said.

Yesterday the 81 year old attended a bipartisan luncheon along with Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Paul Ryan and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and other dignitaries including the Tibetan PM Lobsang Sangay.
