DHARAMSHALA, Sept. 25: His Holiness the Dalai Lama at the inter-faith religious leaders gathering at Gandhi ashram today said people of all religion and the one billion nonbelievers in the world can study ancient Indian philosophy as purely academic subjects.

Reiterating his belief that all major world religious traditions carry the same message of love, kindness, and tolerance, he added, “Buddhism is one of the important religions, but I cannot say it is the best as with medicine, the prescription is dependent on the sick.”

The gathering organized by Harijan Sangh Sevak (HSS) was also attended by representatives of all major religious traditions in India including the world-renowned Ramkatha’ Exponent Morari Bapu, Swami Chitanand Maharaj, Hazrat Maulana Madni, Sadhvi Bhagti Saraswati, Jathedar Gurbachan Singh, and Maulana Kokab Mujtaba among others representing different religious traditions in India.

His Holiness in his speech referred to the persecution of Muslims by Buddhist monks in Burma and said he is saddened to see people kill each other in the name of religion and that time is ripe for India with its history of over 2000 years of religious co-existence to show the world that religious harmony is possible.

“The availability of different philosophical views and concepts provide more choices for the people and is totally wrong to disrespect and fight because of religious tradition.”

At His Holiness recommendation that India should combine its ancient knowledge with modern education, Swami Ramdev stepped in to inform that with support from PM Shri. Modi, and Home Minister Amit Shah, Bhartiya Education Board is being constituted to combine modern and ancient education, as dreamt by Gandhi.

HSS President Dr. Shankar Kumar Sanyal presented His Holiness the Dalai Lama with a miniature chakra, the physical embodiment, and the symbol of Gandhi's constructive program.

Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswati, the president of Divine Shakti Foundation, launched her book called “Come home to yourself” (Wisdom for Life from the Parmarth Niketan Ashram).

HSS is a non-profit founded by Gandhi in 1932 to uplift the downtrodden and weaker section of the society following Gandhian ideas and ideal. It has 26 chapters across India with its headquarter in Delhi.

The gathering today was part of the nine-day program from September 24 to October 2, to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
