DHARAMSHALA: The Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama arrived yesterday in Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia, for a six-day visit, from 18 – 23 November.

His Holiness was warmly received by the Indian Ambassador, Mongolian supporters and officials at the airport.

His Holiness is scheduled to deliver a public address at the Central Cultural Place and Wrestler’s Palace. Moreover, His Holiness will attend a Buddhist meeting, which is being held from 14 – 21 November at the Gandan Monastery. Besides engaging with academicians, His Holiness will receive an honorary degree during his stay in Ulaanbaatar.

The Chinese government raised objection to this visit and asked Mongolia to bar the visit citing dampened ties with its northern neighbour. “We strongly urge Mongolia to act by keeping in mind the big picture of maintaining the stable development of bilateral relations and to keep their promises made on this issue,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said.

His Holiness first visited Mongolia in 1979. When he arrived back in 2002, the Chinese side had protested the visit and had closed the border with Mongolia for two days. When His Holiness visited Mongolia in 2006, China cancelled flights between Beijing and Ulaanbaatar. His Holiness last visited Mongolia in 2011.
