BODH GAYA: Quickly broaching the subject of feminism on his third-day teachings in Bodh Gaya, Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama recounted the highly empowered female Buddhist practitioners who happened several hundred years ago and of their immeasurable contributions in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.

“Today in the contemporary world, there is so much talk about feminism. This lineage of Avalokiteshvara practice that the Tibetan tradition received has come down from Bhikshuni Palmo, a female Buddhist practitioner,” he said as he was conferring the Avalokiteshvara empowerment to over 30,000 devotees from Tibet, Mongolia, Taiwan, and the west.

Gelongma Palmo or Bhikshuni Palmo is the founder of the Nyungne lineage, who lived during the tenth or eleventh century. The practice of Avalokiteshvara associated with Nyungne has since widely spread in Tibet.

“I received the transmission of this initiation from Tadrak Rinpoche, and my senior tutor, Ling Rinpoche and on that basis, done recitation of the six syllable mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum,” he told them.

“In order to give this initiation for spiritual maturation of the disciples,” he said. “You would have to engage in listening, studying and reflection and meditation on practice of Avalokiteshvara”.

His Holiness said that the initiation is for activating that of the four potentials within human beings for the four Buddha bodies. “In the highest yoga tantra, there are four vast initiations for purifying one’s body, speech and mind and body, speech and mind collectively. In this case, there are two initiations, one is water initiation for Dharmakaya, Truth body of the Buddha (Tib: ཆོས་སྐུ་) and other is crown initiation which is for attainment of form body, Rupakaya of Buddha (གཟུགས་སྐུ་). It is a matter of presenting it in short or longer version otherwise all these initiations are for attaining these two forms of Buddha body.”

As the empowerment ceremony was concluded, Abbots and members of Namgyal Monastery and Tenzin Jampel Choe kyi Shenyen Rinpoche made a long life prayer offering for His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Tomorrow there will offering of puja at the Mahabodhi Temple. From 18 to 21 January, His Holiness will give the 13-Deity yamantaka initiation, heruka initiation, solitary hero yamantaka. The initiations were requested by Gyudmey and Gyuto Tantric Universities, two tantric colleges of Gelug tradition and individual practitioners.
