DHARAMSHALA, Sept. 20: His Holiness the Dalai Lama said those who come through modern material-oriented education and outlook resort to alcohol, drugs and suicides when emotions overtake them. The Tibetan leader was speaking at the Shri Ram School in New Delhi on "Educating the Heart & Mind" to over 2300 students from 50 schools.

“The ancient Indian knowledge, on the other hand, teaches how to tackle destructive emotions and promote karuna and ahimsa,” he said, urging young Indians to combine modern education, material development, technology and science with Indian ancient knowledge.

“If you, young people can combine the two, then your life will suddenly be happier and calm.”

He said an encouraging thing here is that all destructive emotions are based on ignorance, narrowmindedness, shortsightedness while all the positive emotions, such as karuna is based on reason.

“Temporarily, destructive emotion very powerful but when you think more, it doesn’t have a sound basis like positive emotions.”

His Holiness proclaimed that reviving the ancient Indian knowledge is one of his commitments and told the students that training or transforming our emotion is your own knowledge.

“Although I encountered lots of complications in my own experience, my ability to give peace of mind to others is because of India’s knowledge,” he said.

“Lots of problems which we are facing today is because of anger, hatred, jealousy, fear, and too much competition. Most of the creator of the manmade problem is anger which is related to selfishness. Karuna is a sense of concern for other’s well-being that leaves no room for anger, hatred, exploitation.”

His Holiness also spoke at length about India’s historically important role in maintaining religious harmony, climate change he witnessed in his own lifetime, the ill effect of concepts of ‘my country, my people’ versus ‘others’ and the sameness of all religions in promoting love and humanity.

His Holiness is scheduled to meet a group of experts tomorrow, take part in an interactive session with Swami Karshni Gurushranandaji Maharaja at Sri Udasin Karhni Ashram in Mathura, UP, on Sunday, followed by a talk at the ashram on September 23 and attend a religious harmony function of Harijan Sevak Sangh, Gandhi Ashram on September 24.

The Tibetan spiritual leader is set to return to Dharamshala on September 26.

The event today was hosted by the Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth (SPIC MACAY).
