Days ahead of the 53rd Tibetan National Uprising Day commemorations on March 10, leaflets calling for Tibet’s independence and the return of Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama from exile have once again surfaced in Tibet.

The leaflets demanding the restoration of the legacy of Tibet’s independence were found spread around the Sog Tsendhen monastery on Sunday, March 4.

According to sources in exile with links in the region, Chinese security personnel have beefed up surveillance in the region following the incidence.

Last December, similar leaflets were found inside the Sog Tsendhen monastery, which led to the suspected arrest of monk Kalsang Tsultrum. The monk, in his late teen, had gone missing mid-January after Chinese police suspected of his involvement in the appearance of the leaflets.

In another incidence, two Tibetan monks of the Sog Tsendhen monastery were given jail terms in February for viewing photos of the ongoing self-immolation protests inside Tibet.

Choeying Logyal, 31 and Choepal Dawa, 21, were detained on January 15 for viewing photos of self-immolation protests of monks of Kirti monastery in Ngaba on a computer.

The court passed the sentences in secrecy without any knowledge of family and friends of the two monks.

“I don’t think that I can come home for the next two years,” Logyal later wrote to his family. “You all don’t worry about me as I was arrested neither for stealing nor for lying but for viewing the photos of the sacrifices of our countrymen on the computer.”
