DHARAMSHALA, October 7: Eight Tibetans were arrested yesterday by Tamil Nadu police and detained at Chennai puzhal central jail where prominent activist Tenzin Tsundue was shifted early yesterday following his arrest the previous day.

The eight arrested yesterday consists of Students for a Free Tibet (SFT) India director and two executive members, members of Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC), and the President and two members of the Tibetan Students’ Association of Madras (TSAM).

The police were reportedly acting on a tip-off from central intelligence agencies that the Tibetans were planning to protest the Chinese President Xi Jinping's proposed India visit this Friday.

Tenzin Choedon, vice president of TSAM told phayul over the phone that TSAM President was frequently visited by police officers for the last two days before apprehending and taking him to Selaiyur police station on Sunday morning.

Around 6 pm on Sunday, the Selaiyur police officers visited the residence of other TSAM members and took about a dozen students to the police station where they were photographed and made to sign a letter.

The letter addressed to the station police inspector reads, “It is to inform you that I will not indulge in any unlawful activities which may likely breach peace or disturb public tranquility.”

Tamil Nadu police are reportedly working around the clock to secure the coastal town of Mamallapuram, at a distance of 50 km from Chennai, finalized as the venue to host the highly anticipated summit.

The arrested Tibetans are likely to remain in police custody until the Xi’s departure. Several members of the student association expressed fear about the plight of the arrested.
