DHARAMSHALA, May 11: The family of latest Tibetan self-immolator from Bora Township in Gansu Province has been subjected to harassment by the authorities, according to Radio Free Asia. According to a source, the family members of Chagdor Kyap have been barred from holding post - death prayers and also stopped relatives and friends from visiting the family.

The 16-year-old student set himself ablaze on May 2 near Bora Monastery in Sangchu County in Kanlho Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province to protest against Chinese rule in Tibet. Engulfed in flames, Kyab shouted slogans such as ‘Freedom in Tibet’ and ‘long life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.’

“Authorities are not allowing the family to invite monks to perform religious rituals for Chagdor Kyab, and they are also preventing friends and other people from the village from visiting the family (to offer their condolences),” RFA quoted the source.

Following Kyab’s self-immolation, the authorities imposed heavy restrictions on Internet and other communication means in the region making it hard to obtain information about Kyab.

Kyab on May 2 ran towards the Chinese government offices of Bora Township while he was burning but collapsed before reaching there. Soon after his self-immolation, the police doused the fire and took away his body. As of now his whereabouts and condition is still unclear.

Kyab became the 149th Tibetan to resort to self-immolation as a form of protest against the Chinese rule in Tibet and also the third in three months, the two others being a 24-year-old farmer Pema Gyaltsen on March 18 and Wangchuk Tsetan, 39, on April 15 in Nyagrong County.
