DHARAMSHALA, April 4: A Tibetan monk who led a protest in 2008 nation wide uprising months before the Beijing Olympics has been released from Mianyang prison in Chengdu, the provincial capital of Sichuan province, reported the Voice of Tibet.

Kyorpon Tsultirm Gyatso arrived at his village on the night of April 1 after completing his nine year sentence.

Tsulitrim was convicted for leading a protest in 2008 protest outside the local government office in Tsenyi, a small town in Ngaba County in Ngaba region, known for several anti-government protests and self immolations over the last several years.

According to a source from the region, the monk belonging to Amchok Tsenyi Monastery reached his hometown around midnight of April 1 amid warm reception from his fellow village folks.

“Many of his fellow classmates along with monks from his monastery visited him after he arrived around midnight. The Chinese authorities had already warned him that he should enter his hometown only after midnight,” the source said.

The current physical condition of the 52-year old monk and the severity of the tortures he went through during his time in prison are still not clear as of now.

Phayul reported earlier in 2008 that around 600 monks from the monastery carried out a demonstration outside the local government office on March 17, 2008, demanding ‘Freedom in Tibet’, ‘the return of the Dalai Lama and his long life’ and the ‘release the 11th Panchen Lama’.

It was also reported that two monks were injured in an ensuing police fire during the protest, resulting in mass arrest after Chinese police surrounded the monastery the following day.

After the widespread pan-Tibet protest of 2008, the Tibetan populated areas and the so-called Tibet Autonomous Region saw many self-immolations and solo protests against the Chinese rule in Tibet. So far 147 Tibetans have self-immolated in protest against Beijing’s repressive rule since 2009.
