DHARAMSHALA, May 6: A US Congressional delegation led by long-time Tibet supporter and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi will be visiting Dharamshala to meet the Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama next week.

The Pelosi led seven-member delegation of Congressmen Jim McGovern, Betty McCollum, Judy Chu, Joyce Beatty, Jim Sensenbrenner, Eliot Engel and Pramila Jayapal is scheduled to visit the seat of Tibetan government in exile (officially known as Central Tibetan Administration) for a two-day visit from May 9-10.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama will grace an official reception for the American legislators at an event on May 10 at the Tsuglakhang courtyard.

“The CTA is honored to welcome the second visit by a high-level bipartisan delegation of the US Congress led by leader Nancy Pelosi to Dharamshala after nine years,” said CTA President Dr. Lobsang Sangay in an official announcement.

The visit to Dharamshala will be part of the delegation’s visit to India, Nepal, Germany and Belgium ‘focusing on national security, the global economy, bilateral and multilateral relations, and human rights’.

Welcoming the delegation’s visit, Matteo Mecacci, President of the International Campaign for Tibet, said, “The visit sends a strong message to the Tibetan people that Ms. Pelosi and the Congress care deeply about Tibet, and it also reminds China that as long as the Tibetan issue remains unresolved, the international community will continue to put the spotlight on it.”

Senator Pelosi along with Congressman Jim McGovern have been a strong support of Tibetan struggle and have also led a US congressional delegation to China and Tibet, in what the Senator said was a ‘highly controlled’ visit with more than 30 Chinese security officers accompanying the delegation of seven. The historic visit also involved congressmen Betty McCollum and Joyce Beatty, who are also part of the delegation visiting Dharamshala.

The 77-year-old US lawmaker, who is a big critic of China’s human rights abuse in Tibet and a great supporter of the exiled Tibetan leader, last visited Dharamshala in March, 2008 with nine congressmen as part of her delegation.
